hey there,

I'm Dacia

I was born Deaf and am the oldest of seven children. I knew I was loved and cared for, but I often felt isolated and lonely because I had no way to communicate with my family.

Feeling isolated is common in children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Thankfully, I learned ASL when I was nine years old. My mother tried to learn along with me but she had a lot of little hands that needed her attention. I was grateful that my mother took the time to learn to sign with me, but I wished that I could better communicate with the other members of my family.

What a blessing it would have been to have had a program where my parents AND siblings could have learned ASL together, side by side!

Oh the conversations we could have had!

We are here to break the cycle of isolation.

We will never forget the phone call we received.

While working with an 8-year old boy in the classroom, his mom calls.

This mom asks, “Can you interpret to my child for me?”

We stepped in to help.

This mom asks her son, “Why were you crying and rolling all over the floor at the grocery store yesterday.”

This 8-year old boy had tears down his face:

“Mom, I’ve been trying to tell you. You always buy me and my brother the blue drink. I don’t like the blue drink, I wanted the red drink.”

An 8-year old boy, isolated, because he couldn’t ask for a red drink.

Truthfully, “red drink story” was one of DOZENS of similar stories we’ve experienced over the years (including Dacia’s childhood!)

Learning a new language can feel daunting! It’s easy to feel like you are failing or don’t know where to start.
